The Ghana Association of Elected Assembly Members (GAAM) has petitioned the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) over the suspension of the 2025 District Level By-elections, warning it may seek court action if the polls are not rescheduled promptly.
In a letter addressed to the commission’s chairperson, GAAM said the decision to put the by-elections on hold was abrupt and contradicted earlier communication indicating the process was continuing.
The association cited an October 2025 press release announcing the reopening of nominations, signed by the commission’s deputy chair in charge of operations, Samuel Tetteh.
A subsequent statement dated 3 November 2025, signed by Fred Tetteh, deputy director of research, monitoring and evaluation, said the by-elections had been suspended until further notice.
GAAM said many prospective candidates had already begun preparations, including filing nomination forms and engaging with communities, and described the late suspension as creating uncertainty for aspirants and grassroots stakeholders.
Vacant electoral area seats must be filled without delay to ensure effective representation and smooth local administration, the association said, calling on the commission to explain the suspension and announce a new election date.
GAAM warned that failure to receive a response within two weeks would compel it to seek legal redress.
The petition was signed by GAAM’s national president, Ackah Nelson Frank, who urged the commission to act in the interest of transparency, accountability and democratic governance.
