The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Savelugu has criticised the deputy minister of transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, over what it describes as her open endorsement of the area’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Fatahiya Abdul Aziz.
The backlash follows Affo-Toffey’s appearance at an event organised by the Savelugu MP; she was later seen in a video clip, shot at the event, praising Abdul Aziz’s work and suggesting she deserved another term in office.
Addressing a press briefing, the NDC constituency communications officer for Savelugu, Nyaba Abass Abdul Rahman, described the gesture as a breach of party discipline and a disregard for internal structures.
He argued that as both a senior member of the NDC and a government appointee, Affo-Toffey making a public show of support for an opposition MP sends the wrong message to the party faithful and grass-roots organisers who worked for the party to win the 2024 general election.
“This action undermines the sacrifices of our members and risks confusing supporters about where her political loyalty lies,” Abdul Rahman said.
The constituency executives also allege that, beyond the remarks, the Jomoro MP donated GHC100,000 to support the Savelugu MP’s foundation and invited her to request further assistance when needed.
They described the reported donation as a betrayal, insisting that such resources should be directed towards strengthening NDC activities and structures within the constituency.
The local party further took issue with comments allegedly made by the deputy minister, to the effect that she does not believe in “party colours”. According to the NDC executives, such statements weaken solidarity for the party in what they describe as a politically competitive constituency.
They argued that loyalty and unity are critical as parties begin early preparations for future elections.
Additionally, the Savelugu NDC accused the NPP MP of previously taking steps that placed the NDC in a disadvantaged position for the 2024 polls, including allegedly denying logistics and access to campaign venues.
The NDC constituency executives are now demanding public clarification from Affo-Toffey and have urged her to reaffirm her commitment to the party to prevent a situation that they warn could lead to internal discontent.
