The Government of Ghana has paid 10 billion cedis in interest obligations under its Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), signalling improved fiscal capacity and renewed confidence in its debt restructuring efforts, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson said on Wednesday.
The payment marks the sixth coupon settlement under the DDEP and the second consecutive settlement made fully in cash, without any payment-in-kind component, according to the finance ministry.
The settlement covers cedi-denominated coupon obligations in line with the restructuring memorandum governing the DDEP, a central pillar of Ghana’s debt management and fiscal consolidation strategy following its 2022 debt crisis.
Strong signal
Ato Forson said the timely payment sent a “strong positive signal” to both domestic and international investors, reinforcing confidence in the economy and supporting stability across the financial sector, particularly banks and pension funds that hold government securities.
Ghana launched the DDEP as part of a broader restructuring of domestic debt to restore sustainability after ballooning interest costs and widening fiscal deficits pushed the country into default.
The government said it remained committed to meeting all future DDEP obligations, citing improving macroeconomic conditions, including easing inflation, declining interest rates and a stable cedi.
The latest payment is expected to bolster Ghana’s credit outlook as the country continues efforts to stabilise public finances and rebuild investor trust.
