Bawumia calls for stronger regional security after Burkina Faso attack kills Ghanaian traders

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has called for intensified regional security cooperation following a terrorist attack in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, that killed seven Ghanaian traders and left several others injured.

“The loss of our citizens in such circumstances is deeply shocking,” Bawumia said. “Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade.”

He urged the government to strengthen intelligence collaboration with neighboring countries and reinforce the nation’s framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism.

The bodies of the seven traders, who were part of a group of 18 tomato traders and truck drivers caught in the attack last Saturday, were burnt beyond recognition and began decomposing, forcing Burkinabe authorities to proceed with burial on Monday, according to the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak.

“The seven bodies have been burnt beyond recognition. As at yesterday, we agreed they had begun decomposing and had to be buried,” Mubarak told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.

The volatile security situation prevented Ghana’s diplomatic mission from attending the burial, though women survivors were allowed to witness the ceremony and take photographs.

Three men were injured in the attack, while one woman remains in critical condition. Burkina Faso’s military is now working to create a secure corridor to transport survivors to Ghana’s mission in Ouagadougou for repatriation.

Bawumia and his wife, Samira, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and best wishes to the injured.

Burkina Faso has faced repeated attacks by extremist groups in recent years, often targeting both local populations and foreign nationals operating in the region.
