The campaign team of Baba Jamal has attributed his narrow victory in the party’s recent parliamentary primary to years of grassroots mobilisation, financial support to branch executives and sustained engagement with delegates.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (9 February), campaign manager Baba Alhaji said Jamal’s win by just over 30 votes was the result of “determination and hard work,” rather than last-minute inducements.
According to him, the former ambassador has maintained a strong presence in the constituency for years, living within the community and supporting party structures long before the contest.
“Baba Jamal did not win because he was Baba Jamal. It was a calculated determination,” he said. “We have been preparing ourselves for the next primaries for years.”
Alhaji disclosed that after the 2024 general election, Jamal introduced an interest-free loan scheme for branch executives, particularly women, to strengthen the party’s base.
Under the arrangement, beneficiaries could access between GH¢2,000 and GH¢5,000 with up to a year to repay.
“As we speak, almost 500 branch executives who are delegates are beneficiaries of this scheme,” he said. “These were some of the things that made the difference.”
He added that Jamal polled more than 300 votes in the previous primary and built on that support through sustained outreach.
“We thank the delegates for the confidence they have in him. He worked hard for this victory,” Alhaji said.
The campaign manager maintained that Jamal remains a loyal party member and will focus on delivering on promises made to constituents.
He also said the candidate would abide by any decisions taken by the party regarding ongoing internal reviews of the election.
“Whatever decision the party thinks is in the best interest of the party, Baba Jamal will follow,” he stated.
