Ablakwa arrives in Latvia to pursue probe into death of Ghanaian student

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at securing clarity and justice over the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia.

In a statement shared on social media, Ablakwa said the trip was prompted by what he described as the “distressing and unclear circumstances” surrounding the student’s tragic death.

The minister said Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, assured him of her government’s full cooperation with Ghana’s investigations.

“The Latvian Foreign Minister has conveyed firm assurances to me that her government will fully cooperate with Ghana in the pursuit of truth and justice,” Ablakwa wrote.

He is leading a six-member delegation made up of senior officials from Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, as well as a forensic expert and a pathologist, to support the fact-finding process.

According to him, two members of the deceased student’s family were initially unable to join the delegation due to visa processing delays but have since been issued visas and are expected to travel to Latvia to participate in the engagements.

Ablakwa also addressed allegations circulating about the trip, clarifying that all family members and experts accompanying the delegation are fully funded by the ministry.

“There has been no case of extortion or the issuance of fake tickets as has been alleged without any evidentiary basis whatsoever,” he said.

The delegation is scheduled to meet officials from Latvia’s Interior and Education ministries, as well as investigators handling the case.

Ablakwa said the Foreign Ministry remains “focused and resolute in safeguarding the welfare and dignity of all Ghanaians.”
