The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, following the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary.
Speaking at a post-flagbearer convention of party stakeholders in the Effutu constituency, Afenyo-Markin said the NPP remains a party driven by ideas and a shared commitment to Ghana’s development, rather than personal ambition.
“We live and thrive on ideas because, in the end, we are bound by something deeper than personal ambition — the progress of Ghana and the unity of the NPP family,” he said.
He said the election of Dr Bawumia as flagbearer should be seen as a collective victory for the party and its long-standing political tradition.
According to him, Dr Bawumia’s journey within the party—from his selection as running mate in 2008 to his eventual elevation as flagbearer—reflects resilience, consistency, and intellectual leadership.
Afenyo-Markin stated that although the party lost the 2012 general elections, Dr Bawumia remained instrumental in the NPP’s rebuilding efforts, particularly through public policy engagements that helped reshape national political discourse ahead of the 2016 elections.
He described Dr Bawumia’s victory as one rooted in the values of the party’s tradition. “His victory is not just a personal one; it is a victory for the NPP tradition, built on loyalty, progress, competence, and character,” he said.
The minority leader also commended the conduct of party members throughout the flagbearer contest, stating that the campaign period was largely characterised by discipline and maturity.
He urged party members to move beyond the contest and focus on the collective task of securing victory in the 2028 general elections, stressing the need for unity of purpose and action.
Afenyo-Markin further acknowledged the contributions of other aspirants who contested the race, describing their participation as vital to strengthening internal democracy within the party.
He called on all party stakeholders to commit fully to supporting the flagbearer and working together to advance the party’s agenda going forward.
