Dennis Miracles Aboagye says New Patriotic Party delegates are prioritising electability and governing competence as they prepare to choose the party’s presidential candidate.
According to him, internal discussions show members are looking beyond popularity and focusing on who can defeat the NDC and also manage the country effectively.
“There are two things involved,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (30 January).
“Who can win against the NDC, and after winning, who has the capacity to govern the country and make the party proud. Delegates want someone who ticks both boxes.”
Aboagye argued that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia satisfies both criteria, citing his national appeal and track record in government.
“Teachers, nurses, doctors, the business community, students, unemployed young people — everybody has an idea about what doctor has for them when it comes to their sector,” he said.
He described the former Vice-President as a unifying figure and reformer.
“He is dynamic and fluid with his ideas. He adapts to the times. He is calm, cool-headed and brings people together. That is the kind of leader the party needs now,” he said.
Aboagye added that Bawumia’s approach of engaging delegates directly, rather than relying heavily on media campaigns, has strengthened grassroots support.
“About 95 percent of the delegates have been in the same room with him. What you see online is just feedback from those engagements,” he said.
