Daniel Offei, founder and executive director of Edutricity, has outlined his vision for building Africa’s knowledge economy through education and innovation, emphasising the pivotal role of students, academics, and digital platforms in driving sustainable development across the continent.
Speaking on the Asaase Café on Thursday (29 January), Offei, a young social innovator and education advocate, explained how Edutricity, a non-profit organisation, leverages education to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through initiatives such as interviewing global changemakers, organising mentorship programs, and creating accessible educational content, Edutricity seeks to shape research and learning to address Africa’s development challenges.
Offei also highlighted Scholafrik, a pan-African social media platform he founded to connect students, academics, and professionals across Africa.
The platform facilitates cross-border collaboration on research and academic projects, helping African students align their work with SDGs while showcasing their innovations to a global audience.
“Education is more than acquiring knowledge; it’s a tool to reduce poverty, drive research, and promote development,” Offei said.
He noted that many students conduct research projects without aligning them to broader societal goals, which limits their impact. Platforms like Edutricity and Scholafrik aim to bridge this gap by guiding research toward practical solutions for human development.
One success story Offei shared was of Benjamin Nketiah, a former National Science and Maths Quiz winner, who, through mentorship from Edutricity, is working on accessible breast cancer awareness and prevention systems for African communities.
Offei stressed the importance of integrating African research into global technologies such as AI, citing the need for local perspectives in shaping innovations that reflect the continent’s realities. He also called for collaboration among students, academics, policymakers, and institutions like the Ghana Education Service to strengthen Africa’s scholarly ecosystem.
“Scholafrik is designed to empower African students and researchers, even those in the diaspora, to contribute to the continent’s development,” he said. The platform allows users to post research, connect with collaborators, and create projects visible to a global audience, earning it the informal title of “Africa’s LinkedIn for scholars.”
