The Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has destroyed a significant quantity of seized illicit drugs, including cannabis and tramadol, as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal drug trafficking in the country.
The operation, carried out under strict security supervision, followed court orders authorizing the disposal of the substances after they had been tendered in legal proceedings.
Authorities said the exercise was conducted in compliance with environmental safety regulations.
Frazer Nutakor, commander of the regional drug law enforcement unit, said the destruction was intended to prevent the drugs from returning to circulation and to send a strong warning to traffickers.
“Those involved in drug dealing must stop. We will pursue and arrest them wherever they operate, and they will be made to face the law,” he said.
Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto emphasized the link between drug use and youth involvement in criminal activity.
“We believe that it is drug use that is leading these youth into criminal activities. So we are committed to deal with it,” he said.
The Ghana Police Service urged the public to support law enforcement by providing information on suspected drug-related activities in their communities, highlighting the continued focus on intelligence-led operations to apprehend offenders and seize illicit substances.
