National security assists KMA, GPRTU to enforce approved lorry fares in Kumasi

National Security has begun supporting the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and other stakeholders to enforce the charging of approved lorry fares by drivers in Kumasi.

The intervention follows the limited availability of enforcement personnel to monitor and ensure compliance with fare reductions across the metropolis.

Speaking on The Big Bulletin, Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, Captain (Rtd) Kwame Jabari, said the operation commenced on 26 January 2026, leading to the arrest of several drivers who were charging illegal fares.

“We started this exercise on the 26th of January, and some drivers have already been arrested,” Captain Jabari disclosed.

He acknowledged that the enforcement exercise has encountered challenges, particularly resistance from some drivers and misunderstanding from passengers.

“We have faced some challenges. Some drivers are being stubborn, and some passengers also get angry when we arrest the drivers, but they calm down when we explain what we are doing,” he said.

Captain Jabari appealed to motorists to cooperate with National Security and other enforcement agencies as they carry out their mandate, urging drivers to adhere strictly to the approved fare structure.

“This will enable motorists to enjoy the benefits of the decrease in fuel prices in Ghana,” he noted.

He further revealed that National Security has engaged Metro Mass Transit to deploy buses at strategic locations across Kumasi where there are insufficient vehicles to transport commuters.

“The National Security has spoken to Metro Mass to provide buses at vantage points where there are insufficient vehicles to get people to their destinations,” Captain Jabari added.
