Tourism Ministry mourns gospel icon Yaw Sarpong and his longtime soloist Mary Tiwaa

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of renowned gospel musician and choral icon Yaw Sarpong and his longtime soloist, Mary Tiwaa, following their passing.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, 22 January, the Ministry described the deaths of the two celebrated musicians as a painful loss to Ghana’s creative and spiritual community, noting that their lifelong musical journey played a pivotal role in the growth of gospel music and choral development in the country.

The Ministry paid glowing tribute to Yaw Sarpong for his exceptional dedication, mentorship and artistic excellence, highlighting his transformative leadership of the Asomafo group, through which he nurtured generations of musicians and enriched Ghana’s cultural and spiritual landscape.

According to the statement, Yaw Sarpong’s work extended beyond performance, serving as a foundation for musical training, discipline and excellence within the gospel fraternity.

The Ministry also acknowledged the enduring musical partnership between Yaw Sarpong and Mary Tiwaa, describing it as one of the most influential collaborations in Ghana’s gospel music history. It noted that their combined contributions would continue to inspire musicians and creatives across the country.

“Together, their contributions remain unparalleled, and their collective legacy continues to inspire the Creative Arts Sector and the nation,” the statement said.

The Ministry assured the bereaved families of its full support during the period of mourning, as the nation reflects on the legacy of two iconic figures whose music touched lives and strengthened Ghana’s choral and gospel traditions.

Yaw Sarpong and Mary Tiwaa are widely regarded as pioneers whose influence will endure through the countless musicians they mentored and the rich body of work they leave behind.
