Ghana set to face Austria in key World Cup friendly in Vienna

Ghana’s Black Stars will face Austria in a high-profile international friendly at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium on Friday, 27 March 2026, as both nations fine-tune their squads ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Kickoff is scheduled for 17:00 GMT.

The match comes as part of a carefully planned series of preparatory fixtures for the two qualified teams. With World Cup qualification already secured, the friendly provides an important opportunity for both technical teams to assess squad depth, test tactical approaches, and evaluate player combinations in a competitive setting.

Ghana, drawn in Group I alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, will view the encounter as a chance to sharpen their competitive edge against a strong European side. Austria, meanwhile, placed in Group J with reigning world champions Argentina, Algeria, and Jordan, will also use the match to gauge readiness and build cohesion.

The Vienna clash marks the first of two scheduled friendlies for Ghana during the March international window. Following the Austria fixture, the Black Stars are set to face Germany on Monday, March 30, 2026, in another challenging test against elite opposition.

Looking ahead to the World Cup, Ghana will open their tournament campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17, followed by a blockbuster encounter with England in Boston on June 23, before concluding the group stage against Croatia on 27 June 2026.

The friendly against Austria is expected to be a crucial milestone in the Black Stars’ preparations, offering the team a platform to build momentum, refine strategies, and strengthen belief ahead of football’s biggest global stage.
