Kwabena Agyei Agyepong says his independence from the outgoing government and his long institutional history within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) give him a strategic advantage to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
The former NPP General Secretary made the case during an interview on the Asaase Breakfast Show, arguing that the party’s 2024 electoral defeat reflected deep dissatisfaction among both the general electorate and party supporters.
“Even if your own party people did not turn up to vote, they were sending you a message,” he said, pointing to economic hardship, job losses and global shocks that, in his view, made incumbency a liability.
Agyepong said his non-involvement in the last administration shields him from public anger directed at government officials, positioning him as a consensus candidate capable of rebuilding trust.
He also warned that harsh rhetoric and personal attacks exchanged among some aspirants had created fractures that could make post-primary unity difficult.
“A lot of water has passed under the bridge,” he said, describing the recent unity pact signed by aspirants as “late, but better than never.”
Presenting himself as a “compromise candidate,” Agyepong said he has maintained cordial relations across party factions and believes he is best placed to rally both aspirants and their supporters behind a single campaign.
He cited his extensive party experience — including serving as General Secretary, Presidential Press Secretary, and a key figure in electoral reforms — as well as his professional background as a civil engineer and media practitioner.
“I have deep roots in this party,” he said. “I’ve worked with all the flag bearers, I’ve been in the trenches, and I understand the institutional mentality.”
Agyepong pledged to run a disciplined and policy-driven campaign if elected flag bearer, promising a lean and efficient administration focused on tackling unemployment and restoring public confidence.
“If the party wants unity, sanity, discipline and a new lease of life,” he said, “then I am the glue to hold this party together and deliver victory in 2028.”
