Godwin Asare Bediako, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party, has implored Bryan Acheampong, the MP for Abetifi who is now a candidate for the NPP 2028 presidential ticket, to mitigate the grave damage his silence is causing the party and his own presidential ambitions by setting the record straight on his profile in the United States Army.
Parliament has said that the former food and agriculture minister has failed to provide it with details of his US army service record as he assured the parliamentary committee that vetted him.
Asare-Bediako, who is also a journalist and regular host on Wontumi Television, insists that Dr Acheampong must clear the air on his status as a former operative or officer in the American military.
As a potential flagbearer of the opposition NPP, with the chance to assume the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana, it is right and proper for Acheampong to clear the needless controversy surrounding his military credentials, the media man said.
Put matters to rest
“If the Parliament of Ghana, which is a house of record, has officially stated that there are no records of the … credentials of Dr Acheampong in response to an RTI [Right to Information request] invoked by a Ghanaian journalist his campaign team should not sweep it under the carpet, as it could injure his campaign,” Asare-Bediako said.
“I think he must make a public pronouncement on it to put matters to rest, especially since, during his vetting as minister of agriculture, he promised to make his credentials available to Parliament,” Asare-Bediako said.
“However, if he still believes that disclosing the ranks at which he entered and exited the American army may compromise national security, he can decide to keep the information.
“Parliament has said it has no record of documents linking the MP for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, to the US army.”
A citizen of Ghana, Edison Osbert Lartey, using Right to Information provisions, is reported to have asked Parliament on 4 November 2025 whether the legislative body “received from Honourable Bryan Acheampong details of his rank of enlistment and discharge from the United States Air Force (or any other branch of the United States Armed Forces)”, and whether Parliament received from Acheampong “a copy of the Certificate of Honourable Discharge or any other documentation confirming his service in the United States Air Force (or a related institution)”.
Asare-Bediako reports that in its response, dated 11 December 2025, Parliament said no such official documentations had been submitted, nor did it have any records of “Dr Acheampong’s enlistment and rank, as well as his certificate of discharge”.
“With respect to this request, kindly be informed that there is no record indicating that details of Honourable Bryan Acheampong’s rank of enlistment or discharge from the United States Air Force, or any other branch of the United States Armed Forces, were submitted to the leadership of Parliament or to the appointments committee following its meeting on Monday, 20 February 2023, to vet the Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture,” the response by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Dzietror, said.
“Similarly, there is no record to show that Honourable Bryan Acheampong submitted any document to the committee confirming his service in the United States Air Force (or any related institution).
“Consequently, Parliament is unable to provide certified copies or further particulars relating to the rank of enlistment and discharge, as no such documentation was presented to Parliament,” Parliament further said, adding that its response was issued in compliance with the Right to Information Act 2019 (Act 989).
Dr Acheampong is one of five candidates vying to run as the NPP’s presidential candidate in the 2028 general election. The party’s presidential primary will take place on 31 January.
