The founder and executive chairman of the Africa Prosperity Network (APN), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has welcomed Ghana’s recent macroeconomic stability, attributing it to continuity of economic policy and fiscal discipline across successive administrations.
Speaking on GH Today on GHOne TV on Thursday on Thursday (22 January), Otchere-Darko said he was encouraged by the country’s economic trajectory, particularly following the successful completion of the domestic bond restructuring and the continuation of the IMF-supported extended credit facility programme.
“We have macroeconomic stability, and I’m looking at trajectory. The trajectory has been positive since the bond restructuring went through,” he said.
He noted that policies initiated under the previous administration – such as Gold for Oil and gold for forex – are now being institutionalised by the current government, and he cited the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board as an example.
Otchere-Darko argued that Ghana’s current gains are the result of difficult and often unpopular decisions taken by both leaders and citizens, including bondholders who absorbed losses during the debt restructuring.
“I was a bondholder. We made sacrifices – some of them involuntary – but those sacrifices protected the economy for 35 million Ghanaians,” he said.
Gabby Otchere-Darko said the governments of the former president Nana Akufo-Addo deserve credit for taking politically costly decisions that stabilised the economy, and that President John Mahama’s present government should also be commended for maintaining fiscal discipline rather than reversing course.
“I’ve never seen that level of fiscal discipline in an election year before, but they did it, and this government has continued it and consolidated those policies,” he said.
He expressed hope that macroeconomic stability would soon translate into tangible economic relief for households and businesses.
“We should give ourselves credit for the suffering we endured and the sacrifices we made. Now we are beginning to see the benefits,” Otchere-Darko said.
