Senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Deputy Finance Minister, Kwaku Kwarteng, has thrown his full support behind Kennedy Agyapong, arguing that the outspoken former MP represents the clearest path for the party to return to power after its 2024 election defeat.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (22 January), Kwarteng said the NPP’s loss in 2024 sent a clear message from voters, one that demands not just a change in messaging but a fundamental reset of leadership.
According to him, presenting Kennedy Agyapong as flagbearer would allow the party to credibly tell Ghanaians that it has “heard the message” and is ready to offer better governance than it did previously.
“If we present Kennedy Agyapong to Ghanaians, we can tell them honestly that this is a new party. Give us power again,” he said.
Mr. Kwarteng argued that Ghana has suffered decades of poor political leadership, driven by what he described as a self-serving political elite that has failed to meet the expectations set at independence.
He said the NPP was not merely formed to win elections but to provide political leadership, insisting that Kennedy Agyapong’s assertive character makes him uniquely positioned to disrupt entrenched governance failures.
“You would need a character that is strong and assertive to disrupt the wrong things in political leadership that have brought us where we are today,” he stated.
Mr. Kwarteng expressed confidence that if Kennedy Agyapong wins the party’s primaries, he would go on to win the 2028 general election, citing growing support among delegates and the broader electorate.
