The government has begun steps to reclaim the residence where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah spent his final years in exile, with plans to restore it as a historic site.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed in a Facebook post that negotiations are underway with the family of Guinea’s first president, Ahmed Sékou Touré, over the property.
The move comes on directives from President John Dramani Mahama and aims to preserve the home as part of Ghana’s heritage tourism trail.
The house, located in Guinea, was provided to Dr. Nkrumah after his overthrow in 1966 and served as his residence while he worked as co-president under President Sékou Touré. Over the years, the property has become abandoned.
A delegation led by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang recently visited Guinea to meet with the Sékou Touré family and inspect the site.
The government says the property will be renovated and incorporated into the country’s heritage tourism circuit, allowing visitors to trace Nkrumah’s journey from Ghana to Guinea.
Officials have assured the public that negotiations are ongoing and that updates will be provided as progress is made.
