A major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline has disrupted water supply to several parts of Accra and the entire Tema Metropolis, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
In a press release dated Tuesday, 20 January 2026, GWL said the burst occurred on Monday, January 19, affecting water transmission to communities within the eastern corridor of the capital.
According to the utility provider, the incident has resulted in significant interruptions to water supply across multiple areas, prompting the immediate deployment of engineers and technical teams to repair the damaged pipeline.
GWL explained that due to the large size of the transmission main and the technical complexity involved, the repair works require careful handling to ensure safety, durability and efficiency.
“Engineers have been working around the clock since the fault was detected,” the statement said, adding that every effort is being made to complete the repairs as quickly as possible and restore normal supply.
Areas affected by the disruption include the entire Tema Metropolis and parts of Accra such as Ashaiman, Gbetsile, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsona, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities.
GWL has encouraged essential service providers, particularly hospitals and schools, to contact the company for support during the period of interruption.
The company has also apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that water supply will be restored immediately after repair works are completed. Further updates, it said, will be communicated as the situation develops.
