Philip Kofi Anning says his decision to openly support Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s bid for the New Patriotic Party’s presidential slot was driven by overwhelming grassroots demand following the party’s 2024 election defeat.
Anning, a senior member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign team, told Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (19 January) that he was drawn into frontline politics after repeatedly hearing a single message from party supporters across the country.
“Everywhere I went—markets, social gatherings, universities—the message was the same: ‘Bring Kennedy, bring Kennedy,’” he said.
According to him, the surge of support for Agyapong emerged organically, long before the party formally began preparations for its presidential primaries.
He said supporters consistently described Agyapong as bold, courageous, disciplined, patriotic, and incorruptible, qualities they believe the party needs to reconnect with its base.
“People point to the fact that he made his money and invested it in Ghana—factories, hospitals, infrastructure—rather than relocating permanently abroad. That tells you something about patriotism,” Anning argued.
He added that many supporters view Agyapong as a pragmatic businessman with the capacity to generate employment, a key issue for young party members disillusioned by economic hardship.
“Patriotism is dying in Ghana. People are milking the country instead of building it. Kennedy represents a different mindset,” he said.
