The Director of Parenting Education Network Ghana, Christian Ayisi, has warned that many parents in Ghana do not fully understand how their children learn in the digital age.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (16 March), Ayisi said the lack of parental awareness about child development and technology use is creating a growing gap between parents and their children.
“Most parents do not even understand their children or the developmental stages they go through,” he said.
According to him, the problem cuts across all educational and professional backgrounds.
“It is not about being a lawyer or a doctor. Parenting is something we must pay critical attention to in this country,” he added.
Ayisi explained that many parents provide digital devices such as tablets and laptops for their children without regulating how they are used.
“In many homes the gadgets are available, but parents are not monitoring the time children spend on them or the content they consume,” he said.
He revealed that interactions with senior high school students showed many spend long hours online mainly engaging with social media instead of educational material.
The parenting advocate warned that excessive digital exposure could contribute to shorter attention spans and reduced reliance on memory among students.
“In the past children had to read repeatedly to understand their lessons. Now many of those habits are changing,” he said.
Ayisi called for greater parental involvement and public education to help families manage children’s technology use more effectively.
