Philip Kofi Anning, a former Deputy Director of State Protocol, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election as the most devastating loss in the party’s history under the Fourth Republic.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Anning said the scale of the loss shocked party insiders, especially given what he described as the NPP’s confidence in its governance record after eight years in office.
“We thought we had done enough after Nana Akufo-Addo’s eight years. Many people benefited from the policies, and we expected that goodwill to translate into votes. Unfortunately, it didn’t,” he said.
According to Anning, post-election data showed that approximately 2.1 million eligible voters who traditionally aligned with the party failed to turn out, signalling deep-rooted disaffection within the party’s base.
He revealed that a diagnostic committee chaired by Professor Mike Oquaye was set up to investigate the defeat, but its report was never made publicly available to party members.
“Even Members of Parliament requested copies of the report and could not get access. That did not help the healing process,” he noted.
Anning said internal frustrations stemmed from perceptions of a non-transparent candidate selection process, unresolved grievances at the grassroots level, and strained relationships between party executives and ordinary members.
“These things combined to create apathy. People were disgruntled and not motivated to vote,” he added.
