Late-night tragedy on Wenchi–Wa road: One killed as timber-laden truck loses load

A fatal road accident claimed the life of a young driver late Saturday night on the Wenchi–Wa highway after a timber-laden truck shed its load onto an oncoming vehicle.

The tragic incident occurred at about 11:40 p.m. when a Kia Rhino truck, with registration number BW 210–20, collided with a Daewoo Matiz, registered BA 2878–13, under devastating circumstances.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Kia Rhino was transporting a consignment of wood from Wenchi to Awisa when its back container reportedly detached from the truck’s body. The container, heavily loaded with timber, fell onto the Matiz vehicle, crushing it instantly.

The driver of the Matiz, Atta Ernest, popularly known as “A T,” died on the spot. He was the only occupant of the car at the time of the accident.

Residents who rushed to the scene described it as a horrifying sight, with the smaller vehicle completely mangled under the weight of the fallen load. Emergency responders later arrived to secure the area and convey the body.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety, vehicle maintenance, and the transportation of heavy loads on major highways, especially at night.

Motorists and community leaders are calling on transport operators and enforcement agencies to intensify safety checks to prevent similar tragedies.
