The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., confirmed that former Finance Minister Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a statement signed by Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith, the embassy said it verified the circumstances surrounding Ofori-Atta’s detention and formally contacted the detention facility to request consular access.
However, officials were informed that the former minister declined to engage with consular staff without his lawyers present.
“The Embassy of Ghana remains in contact with the appropriate United States authorities and will continue to follow the matter closely to ensure that Mr. Ofori-Atta’s rights are totally respected,” the statement said.
The embassy emphasized that it is providing assistance in line with established diplomatic and international protocols.
No further details on the reason for Ofori-Atta’s detention were disclosed.
The Ghanaian embassy said it will continue monitoring the case and working with U.S. authorities to safeguard the rights of the former minister.
