President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to move beyond partisan divisions and commit to a shared national purpose, warning that political hostility could undermine the country’s development at a critical time.
In his New Year message on 1 January, President Mahama said Ghana’s progress depended on unity, mutual respect and a willingness to place national interest above party loyalty.
“We are one people with a shared destiny,” he said, stressing that the country belonged to all citizens, regardless of how they voted in previous elections.
The president said Ghana’s development agenda must not be reduced to party colours or political rivalry, arguing that excessive division risked distracting the nation from addressing pressing economic and social challenges.
He urged political actors and supporters to reject what he described as the “politics of division”, and instead engage in competition based on ideas, policies and solutions.
“Let us disagree without being disagreeable,” Mr Mahama said, calling for political debate that did not demonise opponents or fuel hostility.
President Mahama also reflected on Ghana’s history, noting that the freedoms enjoyed today were secured through the sacrifices of earlier generations who prioritised national unity and sovereignty.
He warned that continued political conflict could weaken institutions and erode public trust at a time when the country needed collective effort to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
“The challenges we face are too urgent, and the opportunities before us too precious, for us to waste time and energy in needless conflict,” he said.
