A 26-year-old salesperson, Nerissah Akordor, and a 28-year-old barber, Courage Addo, have appeared before the Ho High Court over their alleged involvement in a multi-million cedi theft and money laundering scheme.
The two accused persons, currently in prison custody, pleaded not guilty to all charges when they appeared before the court presided over by Justice Rose-Marie A. Asante.
Presenting the case, Assistant State Attorney Anthony Ghattie told the court that between January and December 2025, Akordor allegedly stole GH¢5.189 million from the proceeds of sales of commodities belonging to Amenuveve Sorgbor Company Limited, operators of a Guinness depot in Ho.
According to the prosecution, Addo is accused of dishonestly receiving the stolen funds, knowing they were proceeds of crime. The court heard that the two allegedly used the money to acquire properties, including buildings and vehicles.
The complainant, Madam Theresa Ama Agbovi, Chief Executive Officer of the company, reported the matter to the police on January 10, 2026. She explained that Akordor had worked with the company for four years as a salesgirl before being promoted in January 2025 to manage Sales Point Two, where she was responsible for handling cash and mobile money transactions, supervising sales, and accounting for stock.
Despite efforts by the company to stay afloat, including securing loans from financial institutions, it continued to suffer significant financial losses. Suspicion arose in December 2025 after the complainant received a tip-off that Akordor had acquired substantial property together with Addo, believed to have been financed through misappropriated company funds.
Prosecution said investigations confirmed that Akordor had acquired a building and had commenced another project. When confronted, she was reassigned but later expressed dissatisfaction and resigned from her position.
Further investigations led to the arrest of the accused persons and the retrieval of two vehicles—a Mercedes-Benz C250 and a Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic. Police also identified properties allegedly linked to Akordor, including a two-unit chamber and hall self-contained apartment and a nearly completed one-storey building.
The court was told that Addo admitted receiving GH¢90,000 from Akordor to support a building project at his father’s residence. Additionally, Akordor’s savings reportedly increased significantly during the period, with monthly deposits of about GH¢10,000 into her credit union account, alongside large transfers into Addo’s mobile money wallet.
An internal audit conducted by the company revealed that Akordor had allegedly devised a system to bypass accounting for closed sales sessions, enabling the misappropriation of funds. The audit reportedly established that over GH¢5 million had been stolen.
Meanwhile, counsel for the accused, Emile Atsu Agbakpe, appealed to the court to order the release of keys to a family-owned building where Akordor resided prior to her arrest, citing hardship faced by other occupants. The court directed the prosecution to look into the matter to prevent further inconvenience.
The court adjourned the case to 27 April 2026, for further proceedings.
