Russian ambassador summoned as Ghana probes cross-border cyber abuse case

Ghana has summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the unlawful publication of sexually explicit images of Ghanaian women by a person described as a supposed Russian national, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

The ministry said it summoned Sergei Berdnikov, Russia’s ambassador to Ghana, to formally register the government’s strong displeasure over what it described as a grave violation of Ghanaian law and the privacy and dignity of the victims.

Details

According to the ministry, the meeting was aimed at seeking the cooperation of the Russia in efforts to identify, apprehend and prosecute the individual behind the publication of the images, which authorities say were shared without the consent of the women involved.

Berdnikov acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, including its cybercrime implications, and expressed Russia’s willingness to cooperate with Ghana in pursuing justice, the statement said.

However, the ambassador said he was unable to confirm the Russian nationality of the individual at the centre of the case, adding that the name circulating in the media was not a recognised Russian name and instead amounted to an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.

Similar activities

He also told Ghanaian officials that similar activities linked to the same individual had been reported in other countries and were already under investigation by Russian experts.

The ministry said Berdnikov pledged that the Russian Embassy in Accra would share relevant information to support Ghana’s ongoing investigations, despite the absence of a legally binding extradition treaty between the two countries.

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry said it would continue to leverage bilateral relations with Russia and explore all available international legal avenues to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.
