“Deception is too much”: Alexander Abban slams shifting positions on rights bill

Former lawmaker Alexander Abban has accused Ghana’s political class of inconsistency and opportunism in handling the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (2 June), Abban said political actors were “toying with the minds of Ghanaians” through shifting positions on the legislation.

“We are toying with the lives and minds of the people,” he said, criticising both past and present leaders over their handling of the bill.

Abban pointed to what he described as a full-circle moment, where politicians who previously criticised delays in signing the bill are now exercising caution.

“Have we not come back in full cycle to the original position?” he asked.

He also questioned recent amendments to the bill, noting reports that more than 30 changes had been introduced, potentially weakening its original provisions.

“What happened within this short period that we now realise some things must be changed?” he said.

The former MP suggested that if the government were committed, the bill could have been expedited using a certificate of urgency, especially given that earlier versions had already undergone extensive review.

Instead, he argued, the process reflects broader political manoeuvring rather than principled lawmaking.

Abban further criticised voter behaviour, suggesting that electoral inducements contribute to weak accountability.

“We may also have to ask whether we are too gullible,” he said.
