Accra-Kumasi expressway: 51km cleared; gov’t prepares compensation payments in June

Authorities have cleared about 51 kilometres of the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway corridor as work begins on one of the country’s flagship road infrastructure projects, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson said on Thursday.

The initial phase of the project is being undertaken by the Ghana Armed Forces under the direction of President John Dramani Mahama.

In a Facebook post, Forson praised the military’s role in the early stages of the project, describing the progress as significant.

“So far, about 51km of the entire stretch has been successfully cleared,” he said.

The minister added that compensation payments to residents affected by the project would begin in June after assessments by state agencies are completed.

“In June, following assessments by the relevant state agencies, the Ghana Armed Forces will commence the payment of compensation to affected citizens,” he stated.

The proposed expressway is expected to improve transportation between Accra and Kumasi, Ghana’s two largest commercial centres, while supporting trade and economic activity along the corridor.

Forson described the project as a strategic infrastructure initiative aimed at driving long-term economic transformation.

“Steadily, deliberately, and with remarkable professionalism, the foundation is being laid for what will become one of Ghana’s most strategic and economically transformative corridors,” he said.

The Accra-Kumasi corridor remains one of the country’s busiest transport routes, linking the capital to the Ashanti Region and northern parts of Ghana.
