Black Stars begin Wales camp as Queiroz prepares for World Cup decisions

The Black Stars, have opened camp in Cardiff, with a core group of players already reporting ahead of their 2 June international friendly against Wales.

At least nine players, including captain Jordan Ayew, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Gideon Mensah, Jerome Opoku, Marvin Senaya and Alidu Seidu, have joined the early phase of preparations in Wales.

Videos circulating on social media showed the initial arrivals settling into camp, offering the first glimpse of the squad regrouping as European club seasons wind down.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz is yet to name his final squad for both the friendly and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, but Kurt Okraku has confirmed that the official 26-man list will be unveiled on June 1.

The timing leaves the Wales friendly as a crucial audition window for players hoping to secure a place in the travelling squad.

Key test under new leadership

The June 2 encounter in Cardiff is expected to serve as a significant test for Queiroz, who is overseeing a transitional period for the team following the departure of former coach Otto Addo.

Appointed only months before the World Cup, the Portuguese tactician has been tasked with rebuilding confidence after a difficult run of results, while also establishing tactical cohesion within a relatively short timeframe.

He has already signalled a merit-based selection process, stressing that only “deserving players” will make the final cut — a stance that has intensified competition within the squad.

Group stage challenge looms

Ghana have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, as they seek to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament.

With expectations rising, the Wales friendly offers a timely opportunity to assess player fitness, test combinations and refine strategy ahead of the global showpiece in North America.
