Ghana sliding back into “dumsor” era – Minority

The Minority in parliament says the country has slipped back into widespread power outages, known locally as “dumsor,” accusing the Mahama government of failing to respond effectively to early warning signs and instead targeting critics who raised concerns.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told parliament that prolonged and unpredictable electricity cuts were disrupting households, businesses and essential services across the country.

“Dumsor is back”, the Effutu MP said in a speech read on his behalf. “It is back under a government that campaigned loudly on ending it.”

He estimated that the economic cost of the power shortages was about $320 million annually in lost output, warning of broader impacts on productivity and investment confidence.

The Minority linked the current situation to earlier incidents, including a fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre and the suspension of the GRIDCo chief executive, which it said were warning signs that were not adequately addressed.

It also criticised the arrest of individuals who publicly commented on the power situation, arguing that such actions reflected intolerance of dissent.

“The result is that Ghanaians are again sitting in darkness, and this government’s answer was to arrest the people who said so,” the caucus said.

The Minority called on the Energy Minister to present a “credible, costed, time-bound plan” to end load-shedding, rather than issuing public assurances.

It said the plan should be subject to parliamentary scrutiny and accountability.
