Ghana postpones South Africa evacuation as over 800 flee xenophobic violence

Ghana’s planned evacuation of its nationals from South Africa has been delayed by a few days due to logistical and legal requirements, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana said on Wednesday, as more than 800 citizens seek to leave following a wave of xenophobic attacks.

In a press release dated 21 May, the ministry said the evacuation, initially scheduled to begin the same day, had been postponed to allow authorities to complete mandatory processes including passenger screening, flight clearances and coordination between institutions.

“The planned evacuation has been deferred by a few days to enable our High Commission meet these evacuation conditions,” the statement said.

The government said over 800 Ghanaians had registered with its High Commission in Pretoria for evacuation amid escalating tensions targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.

Authorities in both countries are working to streamline pre-evacuation procedures to speed up the process, the ministry added, noting that senior officials remain engaged to ensure a smooth operation.

Accra also assured affected citizens that efforts were underway to guarantee their safe return home, commending them for their “understanding and patience” during the delay.

The development comes as concerns grow over renewed xenophobic violence in South Africa, which has periodically targeted migrants from other African countries.

The ministry said it would continue to provide updates “in a transparent and timely manner” as arrangements progress.
