The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on Minority Members of Parliament to project the party as a credible alternative government ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at a Minority Caucus workshop held at Accra City Hotel on Tuesday (20 May), Bawumia said the party had moved beyond its period of reflection after the 2024 elections and must now focus on rebuilding public confidence.
“As you return to the House tomorrow, we are no longer here, we are preparing to govern,” he told the caucus.
He added, “We have finished the period of introspection, we must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from 7th January 2029.”
Bawumia urged the Minority to ensure that every contribution made in Parliament reflects the party’s readiness to return to power.
According to him, the conduct and communication of MPs must answer the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians about whether the NPP can be trusted with governance again.
“From this session onward, every word we speak must answer one question in the mind of the ordinary Ghanaian; can I trust the NPP to run the country again?” he stated.
The former Vice President also called for stronger coordination within the caucus through sector committees to ensure a unified message on national issues. He stressed that the party’s positions must be backed by strategy, careful research, and well-crafted communication before they are presented in Parliament.
Bawumia further encouraged members to consistently highlight the NPP’s record in government, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, the school feeding programme, Free Senior High School policy, and youth employment initiatives.
