The Member of Parliament for the Walewale constituency, Dr Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru has cut sod for the construction of teachers’ quarters in Boamasa in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.
The project, funded from his share of the District Assembly Common Fund, will cost GH₵500,000 and is expected to be completed within three months, once the MCE and his bureaucrats release the funds without delay.
The project aims to curb teacher absenteeism during the rainy season, when muddy roads often prevent teachers from getting to school.
Before the 2024 elections, Dr Kabiru pledged to build the teachers’ bungalow if elected. The MP is funding the project with his share of the District Assembly Common Fund. The facility will include toilet facilities and kitchen units to ease the challenges faced by teachers posted to the area.
“The only way you can attract quality and qualify teachers is for you to provide a conducive environment for them to stay and be able to give the needed lessons or tuition to the children. Knowing that many teachers refuse posting to Boamasa because where to lay their heads has been a problem, and also following the fact that the community unanimously agreed that they need this facility in order to attract teachers to the Boamasa community. I find it necessary to prioritize this particular issue and address the issue of teacher retention.”
Once completed, the facility will house teachers who currently struggle to find accommodation in the community and are forced to commute from elsewhere.
Speaking to Asaase News after visiting the community, Dr Kabiru urged the assembly to release funds promptly so construction can begin and be completed on schedule.
“The MP share of the district assembly common fund is what I am going to use to address this. Once the processes are complete and the money is there, I don’t think they should take more than three months to finish. So three months is my go,” Dr Kabiru said.
The community members and the school authority were elated about the MP’s gesture and pray that the project does not stall.
Dr Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru, as a first-time MP for the Walewale constituency, has already initiated youth transformative programmes to support farmers, traders, and other life-changing initiatives.
