Central Region: 80 displaced as tidal waves destroy homes at Moree

At least 80 residents have been left homeless after severe tidal waves destroyed homes and displaced families in Moree in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District of the Central Region, emergency officials said on Saturday.

The National Disaster Management Organisation said at least 13 houses were completely destroyed, affecting around 80 people, including adults and children, following the coastal disaster.

Officials said the incident occurred at about 3 p.m. local time after reports emerged of collapsing buildings and widespread destruction caused by unusually strong tidal waves along the shoreline.

Emergency teams involving NADMO, National Security, the Ghana Police Service and the district assembly were deployed to the community to assist with evacuations and rescue efforts.

Authorities said disaster volunteers also helped relocate affected residents to temporary shelters as rough sea conditions persisted in the area.

Regional and district disaster management officials were supervising rescue efforts and conducting assessments to determine the extent of losses and immediate needs of affected families.

Officials said assessments were still ongoing as authorities worked to establish the full scale of destruction and identify support required for displaced residents.

Coastal erosion and recurring tidal wave activity have increasingly affected several communities along Ghana’s coastline, raising concerns about the exposure of low-lying settlements to environmental risks.
