The New Patriotic Party has ruled out dialogue with the government over recent political tensions, insisting that what is needed is respect for due process and tolerance for dissent.
General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua told the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (14 May) that the party would not be silenced despite what it describes as increasing pressure on its members.
“No government… can gag us and tie our hands. We shall continue to speak,” he said.
Claims of diversionary tactics
Kodua alleged that the remand of opposition figures often coincides with controversies involving the government, suggesting a deliberate attempt to shift public attention.
“Any time there’s a major issue affecting the government, they employ a diversionary tactic,” he claimed.
He linked recent developments to an ongoing controversy involving an independent Member of Parliament, arguing that the timing was not coincidental.
Rejects call for dialogue
Asked whether the party would engage the President in dialogue, Kodua dismissed the idea, saying the issues at stake were straightforward and required no negotiation.
“There is nothing to discuss… all we are calling for is due process and tolerance,” he said.
Kodua said the party would continue to support members who face investigations or arrests, revealing that another party-affiliated individual had been invited by police over alleged publication of false information.
He framed the situation as a test of the party’s resilience, invoking its historical roots in resisting oppression.
“The spirit of the New Patriotic Party will not be clamped,” he said.
Kodua cautioned that actions taken by the current administration could set a precedent for future governments, noting that “power is transient.”
He urged authorities to adhere strictly to the rule of law to avoid deepening political tensions.
