ACF Fiorentina have mutually agreed to terminate the contract of Ghanaian defender Tariq Lamptey, bringing an end to a short and injury-plagued stint in Serie A.
The 25-year-old right-back made only two appearances for the Italian club after joining from Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. in a reported €6 million deal last summer, signing a three-year contract with hopes of revitalising his career in Italy.
His time in Florence was, however, severely disrupted by injury setbacks.
Lamptey came on as a substitute against Napoli before making his only start for Fiorentina on 21 September 2025 against Como. He suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury just 22 minutes into that match, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
He did not feature again for the club following the setback, which added to a recurring injury record that has followed him throughout his professional career.
During his spell at Brighton, the former Chelsea F.C. academy graduate also endured several long spells on the sidelines despite flashes of promise that once marked him out as one of England’s most exciting young full-backs.
The termination of his contract comes with two matches remaining in the Serie A season, leaving Lamptey as a free agent.
The development is a major concern ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with questions over his fitness and lack of consistent game time likely to affect his prospects with the Ghana national team.
Lamptey, who rose to prominence after making his debut under Frank Lampard at Chelsea, was once widely regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in English football.
For Fiorentina, the decision brings an end to an unsuccessful transfer gamble, while Lamptey now faces a crucial period of recovery and career rebuilding as he looks to return to top-level football.
