Baba Jamal pledges cash support to Nima Market fire victims

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, has pledged financial support to traders affected by a recent fire outbreak at the Nima Market in Accra.

The lawmaker announced that each affected trader will receive GH¢5,000 as interim assistance to help them rebuild their businesses following the destruction.

Speaking to journalists after visiting the scene, Baba Jamal described the incident as a “serious tragedy” and expressed sympathy for victims who lost goods and livelihoods in the blaze.

“I want to send my heartfelt sympathies to the people who have lost their wares, and also to all the people who are in this market,” he said.

He noted that officials from the Municipal Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) responded swiftly to the incident, but acknowledged the scale of the damage.

Call for government intervention

Beyond the immediate financial support, the MP called on the government to assist affected traders and invest in long-term infrastructure improvements.

“I call on the government, our president, and the entire nation to come and assist in these difficult times,” he said.

Baba Jamal also urged authorities to prioritise the construction of an ultra-modern market in the constituency, arguing that improved facilities could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Fire outbreaks remain a recurring challenge in several of Ghana’s major markets, often leading to significant economic losses for traders and raising concerns about safety standards and infrastructure.

While the cause of the Nima Market fire has not yet been officially confirmed, the incident has once again renewed calls for stronger preventive measures and better emergency response systems.
