“We must move, not just talk” — Tshegofatso Motaung pushes for AfCFTA action

African entrepreneurship leaders are calling for faster implementation of continental integration policies, warning that conversations around AfCFTA must translate into practical business opportunities for startups and SMEs.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (11 May), Tshegofatso Motaung said Africa’s entrepreneurship ecosystem must move beyond dialogue to implementation.

“We can’t stop talking, but while we talk, we need to move,” she said, adding that collaboration across institutions is critical to unlocking Africa’s economic potential.

Motaung said initiatives such as GEC+Africa and the African Prosperity Network are helping to connect entrepreneurs across borders, but noted that regulatory and mobility barriers continue to hinder SMEs.

“The ability to move is still one of the biggest challenges, especially for SMEs,” she said.

She emphasised that South Africa is working to strengthen cooperation with Ghana, which she described as a strategic leader in advancing the AfCFTA agenda.

“We want to strengthen our connection with Ghana as a base and host of AfCFTA implementation,” she said.

Motaung also highlighted the need to address xenophobia-related concerns in South Africa, describing the country as “still healing from the past” and urging against generalisation.

“There is a challenge of lawlessness and disorder, but South Africans are not xenophobic,” she said, adding that incidents are sometimes exaggerated in public discourse.

She called for stronger cooperation between African states and citizens to ensure orderly migration, trade, and investment flows.

“If we agree on making Africa borderless, we must also act responsibly and support our leaders in implementing practical solutions,” she said.
