A senior Ghanaian lawmaker has dismissed claims that the government is behind the acquisition of a Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft by Air Ghana, warning that such narratives undermine private sector achievements.
Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Transport Committee, said Air Ghana is a long-established private company and not a state-backed initiative as suggested in some public commentary.
“This company has been in existence for over 30 years… we must commend them for taking a bold step to own their own cargo airline,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (5 May).
Air Ghana, founded in the early 1990s, has historically operated through chartered cargo services using third-party aircraft. The acquisition of its own aircraft, Nyarko said, marks a significant milestone for the company.
He criticised attempts to attribute the development to government involvement, describing such claims as misleading and damaging.
“Why do you want to take the glory of someone who has worked for several years?” he asked.
Nyarko clarified that while Air Ghana collaborates with the Ghana Airports Company Limited on infrastructure, the business remains fully privately owned.
“The company belongs to its founder and his family… government does not own even 0.001%,” he said.
He attributed the confusion to social media posts and commentary by some public officials, which he said created a false impression of state ownership or partnership.
The MP warned that politicising private sector achievements risks distorting public perception and discouraging entrepreneurship.
“We should allow the private sector to work… government’s role is to create a conducive environment,” he said.
The controversy comes as Ghana seeks to expand its aviation and logistics sector, with private investment seen as key to growth.
