The government has initiated steps to recover about US$30 million paid to an Indian construction firm, JMC, after it allegedly failed to execute any meaningful work on a road project despite receiving mobilisation funds.
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, disclosed that the company was paid after Parliament approved funding for the project, which was valued at approximately US$158.6 million.
He said the contractor, however, did not deliver on its obligations.
“There is one unfortunate situation where we paid JMC… they took the money and didn’t even do one per cent of the work,” the Minister said.
According to him, the project was expected to have been completed last year, but progress has stalled despite the mobilisation payment of nearly US$30 million.
Agbodza explained that the company had assured government of its technical and financial capacity before securing the contract, following its appeal for consideration during the award process.
Although he did not name the specific project, the Minister stressed that the Ministry would take all necessary legal steps to protect public funds and ensure accountability in infrastructure delivery.
He added that the Ministry is working with the Office of the Attorney-General to pursue recovery of the funds in accordance with the law.
“We intend next week to work with the Attorney-General to further pursue getting our money back within the law,” he stated.
The contractor, JMC Projects (India) Ltd, operates across several countries and is involved in major infrastructure works including roads, bridges and flyovers.
The Ministry says the action is part of efforts to strengthen accountability in public procurement and ensure value for money in government projects.
