Buipe robbery attempt thwarted as police arrest two suspects

The Ghana Police Service has successfully thwarted an attempted robbery at Buipe in the Savannah Region, leading to the arrest of two key suspects after a series of intelligence-led operations.

The swift intervention by law enforcement officers highlights ongoing efforts to combat armed robbery and enhance security along major highways in the region.

The incident unfolded on 26 April 2026, when a police patrol team on duty along the Yapei–Tamale road encountered three armed men.

According to reports, the suspects opened fire on an armoured police vehicle upon spotting the patrol team.

The officers responded immediately, returning fire and forcing the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bush. A locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge were later retrieved from the scene as evidence.

Following the attack, the police intensified their operations, relying on intelligence gathering and surveillance to track down those involved. This led to the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, popularly known as

“Landan,” and Umar Seidu, in Tamale on 27 April 2026. Their arrest marked a significant breakthrough in the investigation and demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated police efforts.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted that they had planned to carry out a robbery at Yapei but were forced to abandon the mission after being involved in a motor accident. They also confessed to their involvement in the earlier shooting incident and identified their accomplices as Babuga Kilo and Malami, who are currently being pursued by the police.

The Savannah regional police commander, assistant commissioner of police Reynolds Manteaw has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all individuals connected to the attempted robbery.

He assured in a statement issued to the press that the police will not rest until the perpetrators are arrested and made to face the full rigors of the law.
