Organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) have confirmed that this year’s ceremony will be held at the Palms Convention Centre after plans to use the Grand Arena fell through.
Public Relations Officer for the awards scheme, Robert Klah, said the decision was influenced by early uncertainty surrounding the availability of the Grand Arena.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb published on 29 April, Klah explained that organisers had deliberately withheld the venue announcement when the event date was initially released because discussions over the preferred venue were still ongoing.
“At the beginning of the year, when we released the date, we indicated that the venue would be communicated later,” he said, adding that signals from managers of the Grand Arena suggested key arrangements had not been finalised.
According to him, while organisers remained hopeful the venue would become available, they simultaneously explored alternative locations to avoid last-minute disruptions.
“As time went on, we started looking at other options, but many of the venues reviewed did not meet the standard we’ve built over the years,” he said.
Klah noted that several factors guided the selection process, including accessibility, parking, crowd control, red carpet setup and overall guest experience, which he said are critical to maintaining the prestige of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
He acknowledged that the Palms Convention Centre, though not the ideal venue due to its limited capacity, emerged as the most viable option.
“Our plan B was the Palms Convention Centre. It’s not the most suitable, especially when you consider capacity, but it became the most viable option available,” he said.
On the reasons behind the unavailability of the Grand Arena, Klah declined to go into detail, stating only that the final decision rests with the facility’s owners.
“The crux of the matter is that the owners want their place for their own use,” he said.
Despite the change in venue, organisers say this year’s awards will maintain their signature production quality, with plans to adapt creatively to the new space while preserving the experience audiences have come to expect.
