GTA, By Faith push “Guinea Fowl Bazaar” to promote Northern culture in Accra

The Northern Regional Office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has backed a cultural initiative aimed at showcasing Northern Ghana’s heritage in Accra, as organisers launch the “Guinea Fowl Bazaar – Accra Edition” at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park.

Speaking on Asaase Café with Naa Dzama on Wednesday (29 April), Lawyer Angelo Yossi Dogbe, Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, said the event is part of a broader strategy to promote domestic tourism by packaging culture as a tourism product.

He explained that the bazaar goes beyond food sales, describing it as an immersive cultural experience designed to “bring the whole North” to the capital.

“We are not just coming with guinea fowl. We are coming with Northern cuisine, shea butter, smock, and other cultural products. It is like bringing the entire North to Accra so people can experience it and then travel up north,” he said.

Dogbe said the initiative is intended to bridge cultural gaps between northern and southern Ghana and encourage domestic tourism.

He added that culture, traditions and local crafts represent “intangible tourism products” that can be packaged and promoted alongside physical attractions.

The bazaar, he noted, is an extension of an annual event held in Tamale, now being staged in Accra for the first time.

“It is the eighth edition overall, but the first time in Accra,” he said, adding that the event will feature traditional food, crafts, mats, pottery, and live cultural displays.

He said the Ghana Tourism Authority supported the initiative to deepen domestic tourism promotion, while encouraging Ghanaians to explore regions beyond their usual travel patterns.

The event is scheduled for 1 and 2 May, running from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily at the Efua Sutherland Park, and is expected to feature cultural performances, family activities, and discounted food sales.

Organisers say the aim is to encourage families to experience Northern culture in a relaxed, festive setting.
