Ghana Football Association is set to receive $12.5 million from FIFA to support the Black Stars’ campaign at the expanded 2026 World Cup, following a significant increase in tournament funding.
FIFA confirmed that each of the 48 participating teams will receive $2.5 million in preparatory funds, up from $1.5 million at the previous edition. In addition, qualification payments have been raised to $10 million, compared to $9 million in 2022.
The increases form part of a broader expansion of the tournament’s financial package, with total distributions rising to $871 million—an uplift of more than $100 million driven by the commercial success of the competition.
The decision was approved by the FIFA Council during a meeting in Vancouver ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress, as the governing body finalises plans for what will be the largest World Cup in history.
“This is one more example of how FIFA’s resources are reinvested back into the game,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, noting that the organisation was in its “most solid financial position ever.”
The 2026 tournament, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the first to feature 48 teams, expanding from the traditional 32-team format.
Beyond the direct payments, FIFA said participating nations will also benefit from additional subsidies covering team delegation costs and enhanced ticket allocations valued at more than $16 million.
However, the scale and logistics of staging matches across three North American countries have raised concerns among some football associations. UEFA has relayed worries from European teams about travel demands, tax complications and the risk that early elimination could make participation financially challenging.
Despite these concerns, the increased funding is expected to ease preparation burdens for teams like Ghana as they aim to compete effectively on the global stage.
