Calls for Jinapor’s resignation “politically motivated” – ministry

The Ministry of Energy has rejected calls for the resignation of Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, describing the demands as politically motivated amid efforts to stabilise the country’s power supply.

The opposition Minority in Parliament on Tuesday (29 April) urged Jinapor to step down, citing persistent electricity outages in parts of the country as evidence of leadership failure.

But the ministry dismissed the criticism, insisting that the government has made significant progress in addressing longstanding challenges in the sector.

Speaking to local media, ministry spokesperson Richmond Rockson said the minister’s record should be judged on measurable improvements rather than political rhetoric.

“For somebody who has kept the lights on… 12 months of no load shedding, is he somebody you describe as a failure?” Rockson said.

He added that the government has expanded generation capacity, maintained relative stability in electricity supply for an extended period and made strides in resolving the sector’s financial difficulties.

Rockson also pointed to the payment of $1.47 billion to utility companies as a sign of renewed commitment to restoring confidence in the sector and attracting further investment.

The Minority, however, maintains that the recent outages highlight unresolved structural issues and has renewed pressure on the government to take decisive action.

Ghana has faced recurring power supply challenges for more than a decade, with intermittent outages—locally known as “dumsor”—remaining a politically sensitive issue.
