Ghana have appointed Portuguese coach Daniel Gaspar as goalkeepers’ trainer for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reuniting him with head coach Carlos Queiroz as the team intensifies preparations for the tournament.
Gaspar’s move was confirmed by his club Hartford Athletic, marking his return to international football with Ghana, who are set for their fifth World Cup appearance.
The appointment extends a long-standing partnership between Gaspar and Queiroz that dates back more than three decades. The pair have worked together across multiple national teams and club sides, including Portugal, South Africa and Iran.
During their time with Iran, Gaspar served as assistant and goalkeeping coach as the team qualified for the 2014 World Cup and reached the quarter-finals of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.
Gaspar brings extensive experience, having held goalkeeping roles with Portugal’s senior and youth national teams as well as top clubs including Sporting CP and Benfica. He also worked under Luiz Felipe Scolari in Portugal’s setup ahead of the 2004 European Championship.
Since joining Hartford Athletic in 2022, Gaspar has overseen significant defensive improvements, helping the club to one of their strongest recent runs, including a USL Jägermeister Cup triumph and a solid start to the current campaign.
His appointment is expected to bolster Ghana’s goalkeeping department, with first-choice keeper Benjamin Asare likely to benefit from his experience in elite competitions.
Ghana have been drawn in a challenging Group L at the World Cup, alongside England, Croatia and Panama. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in subsequent fixtures.
Queiroz, who recently took charge of the Black Stars, has been tasked with guiding the four-time African champions beyond the group stage after early exits in 2014 and 2022.
Gaspar’s arrival is seen as a key addition to the technical team as Ghana seek to strengthen their defensive organisation and goalkeeping performance on football’s biggest stage.
