A member of Ghana’s parliament energy committee blamed poor planning and financial constraints for the country’s recurring power outages, calling for an independent audit of critical infrastructure.
Michael Kwasi Aidoo said there were no prior warnings about the recent disruption linked to the Akosombo Dam incident but stressed the need for a nationwide safety review.
“It is necessary that government commissions a national infrastructure audit so we can assess all installations and prevent such occurrences,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (28 April).
Aidoo, who represents Oforikrom and serves on parliament’s energy committee, rejected claims that engineers were sabotaging the system, warning that such accusations risk demoralising critical technical staff.
He said Ghana has sufficient generation capacity—over 5,200 megawatts—but struggles with planning, maintenance cycles, and financing.
“The problem is not capacity. It is planning and the financial challenges within the sector,” he said.
He also questioned the use of revenues from energy levies, noting that millions of cedis generated monthly could help address debts to independent power producers and improve infrastructure.
The lawmaker called for greater transparency and accountability, including a parliamentary inquiry into recent outages, to determine root causes and prevent future disruptions.
He warned that continued politicisation of the energy sector could undermine investor confidence and operational efficiency.
“We are managing the system, not building resilience,” he said.
