Ghana’s main public utility workers’ union rejected claims that staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana were sabotaging the power system, warning that such accusations could endanger workers and undermine operations.
General Secretary of the Public Utilities Workers’ Union, Timothy Nyame, said there was no evidence to support allegations that engineers were deliberately causing outages amid ongoing supply disruptions.
“If we don’t sell power, we don’t get revenue. What do we gain from denying customers electricity?” Nyame said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (28 April).
His comments follow claims by political actors that some engineers were acting as “saboteurs” behind intermittent outages, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
Nyame described the claims as “dangerous,” cautioning that they expose field workers to potential attacks from frustrated consumers during outages.
“There is no power outage without records. Every fault is documented and traceable within the system,” he said, adding that engineers operate under strict supervision and cannot arbitrarily shut down supply.
The union leader said workers continue to operate under resource constraints, including inadequate transformers and rising demand driven by population growth and expanding electricity access.
He noted that while government has begun deploying new transformers, current supply remains insufficient to meet demand.
Nyame also confirmed that the union had received petitions over recent managerial transfers but was engaging management and authorities through internal processes.
He urged political actors and commentators to refrain from inflammatory claims and instead support efforts to address structural challenges in the sector.
