The new musical biopic Michael, based on the life of late pop icon Michael Jackson, has recorded the biggest opening weekend ever for a biographical film at the global box office.
The film has grossed $217 million worldwide since its release, surpassing previous record holders such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Oppenheimer.
Starring Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, the film portrays the music legend’s rise to global fame, with a strong focus on his early career, family dynamics, and relationship with his father.
Backed by Jackson’s estate, the production incorporates his original vocals as part of the storytelling approach.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the project underwent significant changes during production, including costly reshoots following legal issues that affected the original storyline. The film’s budget is estimated at around $200 million.
While critics have offered mixed reviews, audience response has been significantly stronger, reflected in solid box office performance and favourable viewer ratings.
Industry analysts say the film’s success reinforces the continued global appeal of musical biopics, which remain a major draw for cinemas worldwide.
